When Are WE Going to Get Over It?

For much of the last forty years, ever since America 'fixed' its race problem in the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, we white people have been impatient with African Americans who continued to blame race for their difficulties. Often we have heard whites ask, 'When are African Americans finally going to get over it?

Now I want to ask: 'When are we White Americans going to get over our ridiculous obsession with skin color?

Recent reports that 'Election Spurs Hundreds' of Race Threats, Crimes' should frighten and infuriate every one of us. Having grown up in 'Bombingham,' Alabama in the 1960s, I remember overhearing an avalanche of comments about what many white classmates and their parents wanted to do to John and Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King. Eventually, as you may recall, in all three cases, someone decided to do more than 'talk the talk.'

Since our recent presidential election, to our eternal shame we are once again hearing the same reprehensible talk I remember from my boyhood.

We white people have controlled political life in the disunited colonies and United States for some 400 years on this continent. Conservative whites have been in power 28 of the last 40 years. Even during the eight Clinton years, conservatives in Congress blocked most of his agenda and pulled him to the right. Yet never in that period did I read any headlines suggesting that anyone was calling for the assassinations of presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan, or either of the Bushes. Criticize them, yes. Call for their impeachment, perhaps.

But there were no bounties on their heads. And even when someone did try to kill Ronald Reagan, the perpetrator was non-political mental case who wanted merely to impress Jody Foster.

But elect a liberal who happens to be Black and we're back in the sixties again. At this point in our history, we should be proud that we've proven what conservatives are always saying -that in America anything is possible, EVEN electing a black man as president. But instead we now hear that schoolchildren from Maine to California are talking about wanting to 'assassinate Obama.'

Fighting the urge to throw up, I can only ask, 'How long?' How long before we white people realize we can't make our nation, much less the whole world, look like us? How long until we white people can -once and for all- get over this hell-conceived preoccupation with skin color? How long until we white people get over the demonic conviction that white skin makes us superior? How long before we white people get over our bitter resentments about being demoted to the status of equality with non-whites?

How long before we get over our expectations that we should be at the head of the line merely because of our white skin? How long until we white people end our silence and call out our peers when they share the latest racist jokes in the privacy of our white-only conversations?

I believe in free speech, but how long until we white people start making racist loudmouths as socially uncomfortable as we do flag burners? How long until we white people will stop insisting that blacks exercise personal responsibility, build strong families, educate themselves enough to edit the Harvard Law Review, and work hard enough to become President of the United States, only to threaten to assassinate them when they do?

How long before we starting 'living out the true meaning' of our creeds, both civil and religious, that all men and women are created equal and that 'red and yellow, black and white' all are precious in God's sight?

Until this past November 4, I didn't believe this country would ever elect an African American to the presidency. I still don't believe I'll live long enough to see us white people get over our racism problem. But here's my three-point plan:

First, everyday that Barack Obama lives in the White House that Black Slaves Built I'm going to pray that God (and the Secret Service) will protect him and his family from us white people.

Second, I'm going to report to the FBI any white person I overhear saying, in seriousness or in jest, anything of a threatening nature about President Obama.

Third, I'm going to pray to live long enough to see America surprise the world once again, when white people can 'in spirit and in truth' sing of our damnable color prejudice, 'We HAVE overcome.'

For me, this surreal moment - like the entire surrealism of the past ten days - is not really about Sarah Palin or Barack Obama or pigs or fish or lipstick. It's about John McCain. The one thing I always thought I knew about him is that he is a decent and honest person. When he knows, as every sane person must, that Obama did not in any conceivable sense mean that Sarah Palin is a pig, what did he do? Did he come out and say so and end this charade? Or did he acquiesce in and thereby enable the mindless Rovianism that is now the core feature of his campaign?

So far, he has let us all down. My guess is he will continue to do so. And that decision, for my part, ends whatever respect I once had for him. On core moral issues, where this man knew what the right thing was, and had to pick between good and evil, he chose evil. When he knew that George W. Bush's war in Iraq was a fiasco and catastrophe, and before Donald Rumsfeld quit, McCain endorsed George W. Bush against his fellow Vietnam vet, John Kerry in 2004. By that decision, McCain lost any credibility that he can ever put country first. He put party first and his own career first ahead of what he knew was best for the country.

And when the Senate and House voted overwhelmingly to condemn and end the torture regime of Bush and Cheney in 2006, McCain again had a clear choice between good and evil, and chose evil.

He capitulated and enshrined torture as the policy of the United States, by allowing the CIA to use techniques as bad as and worse than the torture inflicted on him in Vietnam. He gave the war criminals in the White House retroactive immunity against the prosecution they so richly deserve. The enormity of this moral betrayal, this betrayal of his country's honor, has yet to sink in. But for my part, it now makes much more sense. He is not the man I thought he was.

And when he had the chance to engage in a real and substantive debate against the most talented politician of the next generation in a fall campaign where vital issues are at stake, what did McCain do? He began his general campaign with a series of grotesque, trivial and absurd MTV-style attacks on Obama's virtues and implied disgusting things about his opponent's patriotism.

And then, because he could see he was going to lose, ten days ago, he threw caution to the wind and with no vetting whatsoever, picked a woman who, by her decision to endure her own eight-month pregnancy of a Down Syndrome child in public, that he was going to reignite the culture war as a last stand against Obama. That's all that is happening right now: a massive bump in the enthusiasm of the Christianist base. This is pure Rove.

Yes, McCain made a decision that revealed many appalling things about him. In the end, his final concern is not national security. No one who cares about national security would pick as vice-president someone who knows nothing about it as his replacement. No one who cares about this country's safety would gamble the security of the world on a total unknown because she polled well with the Christianist base. No person who truly believed that the surge was integral to this country's national security would pick as his veep candidate a woman who, so far as we can tell anything, opposed it at the time.

McCain has demonstrated in the last two months that he does not have the character to be president of the United States. And that is why it is more important than ever to ensure that Barack Obama is the next president. The alternative is now unthinkable. And McCain - no one else - has proved it.

The present-day national flag of the Philippines has elements of the flags flown by the Katipunan secret society during the Philippine Revolution. The Pambansang bandila ("National Flag") was first conceptualized by General Emilio Aguinaldo during his exile in Hong Kong in 1897 and hand sewn by Marcela Agoncillo, her daughter Lorenzo and a friend named Josefina Herbosa de Natividad.

Though the Katipunan flags aren't considered national flags (and thus not a direct precursor of the current flag), their varieties and designs deserve a mention (plus what other national flag has a Jolly Roger?)

Just more evidence. Over the weekend Gov. Palin said that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had 'gotten too big and too expensive to the taxpayers.'

Only they're not even taxpayer funded. It's only the government takeover, which Sen. McCain supports, that could change that.

I understand that the TV networks and the big papers feel like they're not allowed to criticize Gov. Palin. But we're in the middle of a housing and credit crisis and she doesn't even know what Fannie and Freddie are. It's an embarrassing level of ignorance that would sink a candidate for house or senate."

I have decided I can no longer be a registered Republican. For the first time in my life I announced my support for a Democratic candidate for the presidency, in February of this year. This was not an endorsement of the Democratic platform, nor was it a slap in the face to the Republican Party. It was an expression of support specifically for Senator Barack Obama. I had always intended to go back to party ranks after the election and work with my many dedicated friends and colleagues to help reshape the GOP, especially in the foreign-policy arena. Oakland Raiders Hall of Famer Gene Upshaw, the longtime NFLPA executive director, has died at age 63, according to numerous reports.

Upshaw, an 11-time All-Pro guard for the Raiders, died from complications of pancreatic cancer.

Upshaw played for the Raiders from 1967-81 and played on two of Oakland's Super Bowl winning teams. He was the only player to play on Super Bowl teams in three different decades ('60s, '70s and '80s). Upshaw was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987. He was also named to the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-time Team ini 1994. he Arctic Hotel in Ilulissat, Greenland, is a charming little place on the West Coast, but no one would ever confuse it for a Four Seasons — maybe a One Seasons. But when my wife and I walked back to our room after dinner the other night and turned down our dim hallway, the hall light went on. It was triggered by an energy-saving motion detector. Our toilet even had two different flushing powers depending on — how do I say this delicately — what exactly you’re flushing. A two-gear toilet! I’ve never found any of this at an American hotel. Oh, if only we could be as energy efficient as Greenland!

A day later, I flew back to Denmark. After appointments here in Copenhagen, I was riding in a car back to my hotel at the 6 p.m. rush hour. And boy, you knew it was rush hour because 50 percent of the traffic in every intersection was bicycles. That is roughly the percentage of Danes who use two-wheelers to go to and from work or school every day here. If I lived in a city that had dedicated bike lanes everywhere, including one to the airport, I’d go to work that way, too. It means less traffic, less pollution and less obesity.

What was most impressive about this day, though, was that it was raining. No matter. The Danes simply donned rain jackets and pants for biking. If only we could be as energy smart as Denmark!

Unlike America, Denmark, which was so badly hammered by the 1973 Arab oil embargo that it banned all Sunday driving for a while, responded to that crisis in such a sustained, focused and systematic way that today it is energy independent. (And it didn’t happen by Danish politicians making their people stupid by telling them the solution was simply more offshore drilling.)

What was the trick? To be sure, Denmark is much smaller than us and was lucky to discover some oil in the North Sea. But despite that, Danes imposed on themselves a set of gasoline taxes, CO2 taxes and building-and-appliance efficiency standards that allowed them to grow their economy — while barely growing their energy consumption — and gave birth to a Danish clean-power industry that is one of the most competitive in the world today. Denmark today gets nearly 20 percent of its electricity from wind. America? About 1 percent.

And did Danes suffer from their government shaping the market with energy taxes to stimulate innovations in clean power? In one word, said Connie Hedegaard, Denmark’s minister of climate and energy: “No.” It just forced them to innovate more — like the way Danes recycle waste heat from their coal-fired power plants and use it for home heating and hot water, or the way they incinerate their trash in central stations to provide home heating. (There are virtually no landfills here.)

There is little whining here about Denmark having $10-a-gallon gasoline because of high energy taxes. The shaping of the market with high energy standards and taxes on fossil fuels by the Danish government has actually had “a positive impact on job creation,” added Hedegaard. “For example, the wind industry — it was nothing in the 1970s. Today, one-third of all terrestrial wind turbines in the world come from Denmark.” In the last 10 years, Denmark’s exports of energy efficiency products have tripled. Energy technology exports rose 8 percent in 2007 to more than $10.5 billion in 2006, compared with a 2 percent rise in 2007 for Danish exports as a whole.

“It is one of our fastest-growing export areas,” said Hedegaard. It is one reason that unemployment in Denmark today is 1.6 percent. In 1973, said Hedegaard, “we got 99 percent of our energy from the Middle East. Today it is zero.”

Frankly, when you compare how America has responded to the 1973 oil shock and how Denmark has responded, we look pathetic.

“I have observed that in all other countries, including in America, people are complaining about how prices of [gasoline] are going up,” Denmark’s prime minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, told me. “The cure is not to reduce the price, but, on the contrary, to raise it even higher to break our addiction to oil. We are going to introduce a new tax reform in the direction of even higher taxation on energy and the revenue generated on that will be used to cut taxes on personal income — so we will improve incentives to work and improve incentives to save energy and develop renewable energy.”

Because it was smart taxes and incentives that spurred Danish energy companies to innovate, Ditlev Engel, the president of Vestas — Denmark’s and the world’s biggest wind turbine company — told me that he simply can’t understand how the U.S. Congress could have just failed to extend the production tax credits for wind development in America.

Why should you care?

“We’ve had 35 new competitors coming out of China in the last 18 months,” said Engel, “and not one out of the U.S.”

Why did the United States become the leading economic power of the 20th century? The best short answer is that a ferocious belief that people have the power to transform their own lives gave Americans an unparalleled commitment to education, hard work and economic freedom.

Between 1870 and 1950, the average American’s level of education rose by 0.8 years per decade. In 1890, the average adult had completed about 8 years of schooling. By 1900, the average American had 8.8 years. By 1910, it was 9.6 years, and by 1960, it was nearly 14 years.

As Claudia Goldin and Lawrence Katz describe in their book, “The Race Between Education and Technology,” America’s educational progress was amazingly steady over those decades, and the U.S. opened up a gigantic global lead. Educational levels were rising across the industrialized world, but the U.S. had at least a 35-year advantage on most of Europe. In 1950, no European country enrolled 30 percent of its older teens in full-time secondary school. In the U.S., 70 percent of older teens were in school.

America’s edge boosted productivity and growth. But the happy era ended around 1970 when America’s educational progress slowed to a crawl. Between 1975 and 1990, educational attainments stagnated completely. Since then, progress has been modest. America’s lead over its economic rivals has been entirely forfeited, with many nations surging ahead in school attainment.

This threatens the country’s long-term prospects. It also widens the gap between rich and poor. Goldin and Katz describe a race between technology and education. The pace of technological change has been surprisingly steady. In periods when educational progress outpaces this change, inequality narrows. The market is flooded with skilled workers, so their wages rise modestly. In periods, like the current one, when educational progress lags behind technological change, inequality widens. The relatively few skilled workers command higher prices, while the many unskilled ones have little bargaining power.

The meticulous research of Goldin and Katz is complemented by a report from James Heckman of the University of Chicago. Using his own research, Heckman also concludes that high school graduation rates peaked in the U.S. in the late 1960s, at about 80 percent. Since then they have declined.

In “Schools, Skills and Synapses,” Heckman probes the sources of that decline. It’s not falling school quality, he argues. Nor is it primarily a shortage of funding or rising college tuition costs. Instead, Heckman directs attention at family environments, which have deteriorated over the past 40 years.

Heckman points out that big gaps in educational attainment are present at age 5. Some children are bathed in an atmosphere that promotes human capital development and, increasingly, more are not. By 5, it is possible to predict, with depressing accuracy, who will complete high school and college and who won’t.

I.Q. matters, but Heckman points to equally important traits that start and then build from those early years: motivation levels, emotional stability, self-control and sociability. He uses common sense to intuit what these traits are, but on this subject economists have a lot to learn from developmental psychologists.

I point to these two research projects because the skills slowdown is the biggest issue facing the country. Rising gas prices are bound to dominate the election because voters are slapped in the face with them every time they visit the pump. But this slow-moving problem, more than any other, will shape the destiny of the nation.

Second, there is a big debate under way over the sources of middle-class economic anxiety. Some populists emphasize the destructive forces of globalization, outsourcing and predatory capitalism. These people say we need radical labor market reforms to give the working class a chance. But the populists are going to have to grapple with the Goldin, Katz and Heckman research, which powerfully buttresses the arguments of those who emphasize human capital policies. It’s not globalization or immigration or computers per se that widen inequality. It’s the skills gap. Boosting educational attainment at the bottom is more promising than trying to reorganize the global economy.

Third, it’s worth noting that both sides of this debate exist within the Democratic Party. The G.O.P. is largely irrelevant. If you look at Barack Obama’s education proposals — especially his emphasis on early childhood — you see that they flow naturally and persuasively from this research. (It probably helps that Obama and Heckman are nearly neighbors in Chicago). McCain’s policies seem largely oblivious to these findings. There’s some vague talk about school choice, but Republicans are inept when talking about human capital policies.

America rose because it got more out of its own people than other nations. That stopped in 1970. Now, other issues grab headlines and campaign attention. But this tectonic plate is still relentlessly and menacingly shifting beneath our feet.

1. John McCain divorced his wife, a model at the time that he married her, after he began an adulterous relationship with a rich, beautiful woman 17 years younger than him. McCain carried on the affair for 9 months, while still living with his wife.

John McCain met his 2nd wife Cindy in April of 1979 while still married to his first wife, Carol

McCain would divorce his wife Carol, who had been disfigured and disabled in a car accident while McCain was in Vietnam in February of 1980. Court documents show that McCain lived his with his wife until January of 1980 despite claims in his book that the two had separated before he began his affair with his lover, Cindy.

Ross Perot paid for Carol’s medical treatment and was a family friend of sorts to the McCain’s at the time. Perot said the following of John McCain:

“McCain is the classic opportunist. He’s always reaching for attention and glory. After he came home, Carol walked with a limp. So he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona. And the rest is history.”

2. When asked why he deliberately lied on an issue of the Confederate flag flying over a capital, John McCain offered the following, “I’m sure, for all the wrong reasons… for ambition, votes.”

3. John McCain claims to have received “the highest award from literally every Veteran’s organization in America” on his voting record on veteran’s issues. No way to spin this one - it is a flatout lie. The Iraq and Afghanistan veterans of America have given John McCain a grade of D. Disabled Veterans of America rate John McCain with a 20 percent voting record on veteran’s issues. Vietnam Veterans of America say that John McCain has voted “Against Us” 15 times and “For Us” 8 times.

By contrast, Barack Obama has received a grade of B, a voting record of 80 percent of veteran’s issues and has voted “with” the Vietnam veterans 12 times and “against” only once. You would think that a veteran like McCain would have more respect for our veterans, but, apparently not.

4. John McCain, said of Hurricane Katrina that “if he were in charge, he would have been on the ground helping.” Where was McCain hours after Katrina made landfall? Helping organize and draw federal support for the area, perhaps? No, actually, he was celebrating his birthday with President Bush.

5. John McCain has had men working in his campaign that have taken money to lobby the United States on behalf of a French airplane manufacturer that is trying to take military contracts away from U.S. airplane manufacturers. The man’s firm has also taken money from Ukraine, and has even taken $15 million from Saudi Arabia all to lobby the United States government on behalf of those foreign governments.

Can you imagine if Barack Obama had people like this working for him? So much John McCain staying away from lobbyists.

6. John McCain called his wife a “c***” in front of three reporters in 1992.

The full story is found in the book, The Real McCain, but, here is an excerpt:

‘At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain’s hair and said, “You’re getting a little thin up there.” McCain’s face reddened, and he responded, “At least I don’t plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you c***.” McCain’s excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days.’

The story hasn’t been picked up by mainstream news due to sensitivity of the word and the borderline nature of whether it should be covered in the first place, but, here is more on story (warning: rough language).

7. In July of 2008, John McCain’s top economic adviser, Phil Gramm, called the United States’ current economic hardships as “mental” and called the United States a “nation of whiners”.

8. Are you a fan of George W. Bush? The polls say there is a 72% chance that you aren’t. John McCain has voted in-line with Bush policy 100% of the time so far in 2008. Of course, John McCain has also missed 60% of Senate votes in 2008, the most of any Senator, so there isn’t a real big sample. In 2007, McCain missed an amazing 43 straight votes at one point. Sounds like Senator McCain is very dedicated to his job.

9. Also, in July of 2008, John McCain called Social Security an “absolute disgrace”.

10. Do you still think that Republicans mean lower taxes and smaller government? Under McCain’s tax plan, if you make less than $112,000 per year, you would pay more taxes than under Obama’s plan. So much for it being Republicans who are looking out for the little guy, huh?

11. According to the non-partisan Tax Policy Center in Washington, John McCain’s “deficit reduction” plan would actually increase the already record-setting national debt by over 50%. Today, the federal deficit sits at just over $9 trillion. John McCain’s plans of lowering taxes, increasing military spending, and continuing the Bush philosophy of big government, would increase the national debt by $5.7 trillion. In fact, his policies would increase the national debt by far more than the “big-spending” Democrats.

12. Does your community benefit from any federal earmark money? Many communities do. While earmarks are a popular scapegoat, the fact is that many improvements made to your roads, at your airports, at your government buildings, and throughout your communities come from earmarks. Some earmarks fund programs like providing outreach to children who are abused. John McCain has promised to eliminate earmarks and veto every bill that features one. Why does he promise this? He wants to spend the money on staying in Iraq and this is the only way to afford to stay in Iraq.

13. Did you know that the Iraqi government is asking us to start a plan of pulling troops out of Iraq? Did you know that John McCain doesn’t want to do this, even though the Iraqis want us to? Did you know that in 2004, McCain promised that we would leave Iraq when the Iraq government wanted us to? What changed, Senator? And, why do you want to stay in Iraq so badly anyway?

14. Here’s a guess as to why John McCain wants to stay in Iraq. He wants to use it as a staging area to attack Iran. When asked about how to handle Iran, Iran responds “That old Beach Boys’ song… Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb bomb Iran.”

Apparently, a conflict that would result in the deaths of thousands of American soldiers (the death toll for Iraq is over 4,000) is just a punchline to Senator McCain. Nevermind the fact that Iran is also one of the biggest suppliers of oil to Russia and China. Does Senator McCain really expect them to sit idly by as we take over another Middle Eastern country that provides them oil? Are you prepared to elect a man that seems to take armed conflict so lightly and who would so quickly lead us into another war where Americans would die?

15. When asked what he thought of George W. Bush’s statement that the U.S. might stay in Iraq for 50 years, McCain responded, “Maybe 100, we’ve been in South Korea and Japan for 60 years or so. It would be fine with me, I hope it would be fine with you.”

In closing -

I just want to say this: John McCain is the true danger to this country. Unlike those nasty lies about Barack Obama that have hit your Inbox, these are true and backed up with sources. Do you still feel good about John McCain as your commander-in-chief?

Please don’t vote this dangerous, angry, power-hungry man into office. If you can’t vote Obama or just find yourself being too conservative to vote for those kinds of Democrat policies, please consider voting for Bob Barr, the Libertarian candidate. Barr is the only candidate in this election actually advocating true “conservative” policies - smaller government, less restrictions on freedoms, and less involvement in world affairs.

John McCain is dangerous, ambitious, and angry and will likely lead us into more war and spend more of our money in countries like Iraq and Iran instead of spending it on the American people.

I saw this movie last week and have been intending to put up something about it ever since. I really really liked this movie. Every few years we are treated to a truly remarkable "Roman/Greek" era flick that really sets the the mold. R. Crowe in "Gladiator" immediately comes to mind, as does B. Pitt in "Troy" and of course the original K. Douglas in "Spartacus" and now add to that list G. Butler in "300". This movie really breaks down the start of the Greco-Persian War and shows the advantages of training, equipment, and good use of terrain to maximize an army's potential. Enough about the history, it's the action you want and this movie is full of it. It also has breast and ass so kudos for that. Just overall a great flick. SEE THE DAMN MOVIE!!!!!....

Okay so its been 2 weeks since my last post...so lets get right to it.

Actually went clubbing this Saturday if you can consider going to Huckas in Baltimore as clubbing. This place was packed! I mean 2 rooms (Hip Hop and House) and about a thousand people! This place had terrible service at least a 15 minute wait at the bar, piss poor drinks (settle for beer or shots), limited space (get there early), and an awful DJ (DJ TEC). Oh and around 1 am they had a power outage that lasted about 15 minutes. But if you are looking to hookup, it's where you want to be. I mean there were plenty of ladies for the guys and plenty of guys for the girls. I hate to sound uppity but I am just too sophisticated for this place. Maybe if I were about 22 I would appreciate it more....anyway judge for yourself...2324 Boston St. B'More. THROW BETTER SETS DAMMIT!!!
Once again, it snowed! This time though this was real snow. It was soft and fluffy and came down hard for about 3 or 4 hours before switching to lite rain. I quickly took the opportunity to write my name in the snow. As usual the metro area made a special effort to have as many accidents as possible. I would hate for us to lose our reputation as terrible drivers....STAY OFF THE STREETS YOU NON DRIVERS!!!

And of course the Oscars were last night, everyone I thought would win did. Totally agreed with the "Departed" as best picture, the movie was awesome and deserved to win. Beyonce was HOT!! and Ellen did a great job as host. She is really the best host out there right now. I had initially prepared to give a complete Oscar run down for you, but decided that everyone else would do that for you and spent my time ensuring the Mexican food was eaten and the Guinnes was well nursed instead. I got one problem with the whole show though......THAT SHOW IS TOO DAMN LONG, CUT THAT SHIT SHORT BY ABOUT 2 HOURS DAMMIT!!!!

Wikipedia, shmikipedia. If you really want to understand "hyphy" -- that riveting, hyperkinetic strand of California hip-hop that squirmed into the mainstream last year -- E-40's latest album is the best place to start. On it, the veteran rapper spits car talk and slang lessons over colossal kick drums and slithering keyboard lines, two earmarks of the genre's frenetic sound.

But as a rapper, the self-proclaimed Ambassador of the Bay is clearly making his own music. He over-enunciates almost every syllable, at times sounding more like a game-show host than a seasoned thug. It makes for some peculiar thrills on "Gouda," a song in which he counts his cash while fretting over the future of his neighborhood. "They wanna tear our houses down so they can build some Ikeas," the rapper laments while the strings from Hitchcock's "Psycho" squeal in the background.

E-40's biggest problem on "My Ghetto Report Card" is trying to give hyphy's irrepressible energy some staying power. On the album's breakout single, "Tell Me When to Go," the rapper slyly puts the scene's hairstyles, slang and parking-lot antics into an almost biblical context. "Jesus Christ had dreads, so shake 'em," he commands on the opening verse, before pondering, "Imagine all the Hebrews going dumb / Jumping on top of chariots and turning tight ones." Time will tell if hyphy is just a fad in popland, but for now it's amazing to hear E-40 tap into some ancient, manic energy.

Man!! It seems like just yesterday it was the weekend.

Okay so on Monday my boss wants to talk to me about my hours talking about (insert sarcastic tone here) "did we discuss changing your hours?" I'm like No. "cause it looks like your leaving early on Fridays, so we need to discuss your hours later this week." I'm all like what the Fuck!?! I mean it's not like I don't bend over backwards to help around the office. After all I am one of only 2 men in our office, and if you think your going to get Carlos (name changed to protect the innocent) to do anything other than his job (dare you to show me the actual description) you might as well put up the comedy store sign, cause that's laughable at best. I mean I do all kinds of shit for this place and all they have to do is ask. I am the ultimate team player. All I ask is that I be allowed to come in M-TH from 9-630 and Leave early on Friday say about 130. Is that to freaking much? Its not like i actually require my boss to do stuff for me like ensure the office is running smoothly and all the work is being done in a timely manner. Or actually produce some work herself or pickup the slack from some of my lackluster coworkers. NO NO NO....I mean this place is driving me crazy..I often wonder if I will make it to the office every morning. I lay in bed going back and forth on calling in sick, but inevitably go into work because I don't want to use the vacation time.

I went to Chinese New Year Parade yesterday, I figured instead of being a serious couch potato, I would spend a little time being cultured. Man I am on this serious podcast jones right now. I started out just looking for some podcast stuff for hearing and learning tagalog you know. And then I'm listening to a podcast, they mention a podcast and I check that out and then I hear about another one there and before you know it I got like 10 podcasts a day I'm subscribing to and then I got another 4 or so that I transfer to my mp3 player. It is just crazy, am I the only one going podcast crazy? My favorite at the moment is RBPCshow.com (Really Bad Podcast Show). and the Puntanginamon show. I don't even know where to begin with this one...okay so now my Ex is in California with the boys and I am still here in VA...boy was Christmas tough. But my new main squeeze has made it really easy..she is a wonderful person who knows my pros/cons and chose me anyway..he he he. I am still looking for work in my chosen field of Software Testing..Lots of leads not enough follow ups though. I hope to get on somewhere in the next couple of months. Until then I am at WIMSA with more women than the average man can tolerate in a day..Not quite sure how I make it? It must be because they feed me....you gotta love a place where your co-workers give you free food right?!

Plus working there really keeps me on the patriotic side of the ball..Mind you not conservative though just feeling patriotic....it's funny how I feel the need to describe my patriotism as liberal or conservative...just because so many people who haven't served their country try to make those of us who do not condone the "WAR" to be communist or anti american. Didn't get any Christmas presents this year, although my Mom did put a package in the mail for me...but so far no presents...I spent most of Xmas in the kitchen cooking for my beau and her sister (flew in for Xmas). Gave them some good soulfood. The New Year was spent highly intoxicated..My girl was out of town. The rest of that weekend went by in a flurry of Bowl Games and NFL games.
